Graphic Arts students really outdid themselves this time.
As it turns out, international distinctions don’t come only from football and basketball players, long jump or pole vault athletes.
They also come from UNIWA students, who earned Greece the second place in the world at team level.
On 2 June 2024, Paolo Ortolano, Graphic Arts student at UNIWA who participated in the 2nd Flexo Sinapse Worldwide Packaging Productivity Contest, at COMEXI’s booth H10/C19, completed his effort.
Paolo participated in the final after a strenuous three-month series of continuous matches with many participants from several important universities, such as RIT and Leipzig University of Applied Sciences, which Paolo and his Colombian opponent, Daniel Sanchez from SENA, managed to eliminate in the qualifying rounds, quarter finals and semi-finals.
The match between the two Graphic Arts students took place on excellent terms and was attended by figures of the packaging industry, machine makers, academics, sectoral media, representatives of organiser Sinapse Print Simulators, and sponsors of the contest, COMEXI, MENDEL Systems GmbH, ZELLER + GMELIN and HINOJOSA.
In what looked almost like a celebration, the two students competed on speed of resolving printing problems using SPS simulators. Paolo Ortolano was excellent at handling and lost the first place due to small details, with his opponent, Daniel Sanchez appearing faster. It is also worth noting that all three points he scored were in less than 30 seconds and made him the contest winner. However, the participation alone of a Greek student in the contest final shows the very high level of the Greek entry. It should also be noted that the top ten of the contest quarter finals had—besides Paolo—Stella Theodorakidou and Filippos Kyrillos, bringing Greece to the 2nd place internationally at team level.
The Greek crew expresses its warm thanks to: Ms Andriani Goutsou for dedicating a large part of her free time to train the students; ELSET and HELGRAMED for giving their joint financial support to the Greek team’s participation in Drupa 2024 exhibition; all HELGRAMED sponsors for supporting the organisation of its booth (Hall 7.0 dna G01).
ELSET congratulates from the bottom of its hear the young people who gave their best and stood out in the global scene, their academic teachers and everyone who contributed to this success.
Let’s hope it will be the lesser of those that will follow.
